You can’t drink water during gastroscopy fast.
Gastroscopy is a test in which a 1cm thick hose with a camera is inserted into the esophagus and observed from the stomach to the duodenum. Through this, various lesions in the digestive system such as gastritis, gastric ulcer, gastric cancer, duodenal ulcer, esophagitis, and esophageal cancer can be identified. Early gastric cancer often shows no symptoms. Therefore, regular gastroscopy is required after age 40.
The reason why there is fasting time before gastroscopy is that it takes at least 8 to 12 hours for the food above to come down to the duodenum. To avoid food left on your stomach, you’d better have a digestible last meal. You should also avoid drinking water before gastroscopy. A light walk helps digestion. Avoid drinking sugary, fructose-mixed drinks, milk or coffee. It forms a white protein film on the upper surface and is not washed well, and it may interfere with the endoscopy’s vision, making it impossible to examine it.
Gastroscopy is performed in two ways: sleep and non-surface. Non-surface gastroscopy is carried out after applying an anesthetic to the neck and receiving an injection to suppress exercise in the hip. The test takes about three to five minutes, except when polyps are found or biopsy is required.
Gastroscopy is usually chosen by people with fear of non-sleeping. The examination is carried out in a light sleep state and is more comfortable than a non-surface gastroscopy, but you should lie down for 30 minutes to 1 hour after the examination and rest. Both non-surface and gastroscopy can be found on the day, but after biopsy, the results can be obtained in three to seven days.
Gastroscopy uses a local anesthetic for the throat, so the meal should be eaten after 30 minutes to 1 hour when the anesthesia wears off. It is good to eat soft foods such as porridge and soup so that your stomach doesn’t feel burdened. If polyps were removed during gastroscopy, fasting could take a little longer.
